Storms To Our West

May 31, 2012 - Leave a Response

We have been dealing with a few showers and storms today, but stronger storms are located to our west.  Those storms could contain some strong winds and very heavy rain.  There will be a chance for some some severe storms later this afternoon and this evening.

Strong Storms Possible Thursday And Friday

May 30, 2012 - Leave a Response

Surface Map (Friday Morning)

A cold front approaching the area will provide a chance for showers and storms Thursday and Friday.  The latest timing of this cold front is Thursday night and Friday morning.  It looks like there will be the potential for severe weather ahead of the cold front.

The Storm Prediction Center is showing the potential for severe thunderstorms (15% chance), especially for the North Shore.  Lightning, heavy rain, damaging winds and small hail will be possible.  Over Texas there could be some very large hail!  The tornado threat should be low, but there could be some rotation within some of these storms so I am not going to completely rule it out.

Rainfall totals could range from 1/2 an inch to near 2 inches.   We have been dry recently, so the flood threat is low for right now.

More Strong Heat For Early June

May 28, 2012 - Leave a Response

Temperature Forecast (June 5th – June 11th)

There might not be much relief from the heat for the start of June.  The Climate Prediction Center is showing a 40%-50% chance of above average temperatures.  The Jet Stream will be staying to our North and that means all the cool air and cold fronts will stay away from us, leaving us with above average temperatures.

A Few Storms Today

May 28, 2012 - Leave a Response

A few showers and storms have fired up this afternoon with the strong daytime heating.  I am seeing some storms moving into the lake and it might reduce visibility on the Causeway with heavy rain.  There are some reports of lightning, but I am not seeing anything severe.  These storms could turn strong with the heat and humidity helping to add fuel.

More Heat And Humidity Sunday

May 26, 2012 - Leave a Response

High Temperature Forecast (Sunday)

We tied record highs today at the Airport (93°) and Audubon Park (95°) and I think records could be tied or broken for Sunday afternoon.  So why are we feeling such warm temperatures?

Surface Map (Saturday)

A large area of high pressure has parked itself right over the Eastern part of the country.  This is keep us very stable in the upper levels of the atmosphere and not letting any showers or storms fire up.  This high pressure should break down a bit by Monday and we could see a slight chance for showers and storms for Memorial Day.

High Pressure In Control

May 25, 2012 - Leave a Response

A strong area of high pressure is now moving into the Southeast.  This high pressure system is so strong that it will be dominating the weather for the eastern part of the country, including SE LA.  High pressure gererates a large amount of sinking air, which leads to clear skies…so the rain chances won’t be here as we move into the weekend.

Some Strong Storms Today

May 23, 2012 - Leave a Response

Radar Image

Storms have fired up with the strong daytime heating this afternoon.  We have had some reports of very strong storms in St. Bernard Parish and along the southern part of Lake Pontchartrain.  There have been no confirmed reports of tornadoes, but the NWS will be evaluating the damage and determine if it’s a tornado that caused the damage in St. Bernard Parish.

Scattered Showers And Storms Today

May 22, 2012 - Leave a Response

Scattered showers and storms are showing up on the radar this afternoon.  I am not seeing anything severe and most of these showers will be diminishing for this evening and over night.  Some computer models are keeping a chance for some more showers and storms for Wednesday afternoon…very similar to what we are seeing out there today.  Warm and humid weather will be here for the end of the week and the upcoming weekend.  I wouldn’t be shocked if heat index values are in the middle and upper 90s.

Storms Possible Monday Afternoon And Evening

May 20, 2012 - Leave a Response

Surface Map (Monday Afternoon)

A cold front moving in out of the Central Plains will give us a slight chance for some showers and storms Monday afternoon and evening.  Right now we are looking at a 20%-30% for storms.  The severe threat will be low, but as always we can’t completely rule out a strong storm.  Heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds will be the big weather threats.
